CLASS 3.0
(and later versions)
CLASS 3.0 contains several major improvements, including many new
features, some embellishments, and an occasional fix. The
following describes the principal changes since version 2.05:
NEW FEATURES
TRANSFER GRADES: Transfer a column of grades from one roster to
another of the same length. Any names that don't match will
be indicated.
TRANSFER NAMES: Transfer all the names from one roster to another.
The above two transfer features are very useful for analyzing,
comparing and curving grades submitted by readers or teaching
assistants. See the manual for detailed directions.
SET RANGE: With number rosters, you can set the grade ranges either
manually or have CLASS automatically set the grade ranges
based on either the maximum score or on a normal curve
distribution.
GRADE CURVE: You can automatically increase or lower, in 1/3
increments, each student's letter grade for any assignment.
Number grades can be changed by any amount. The cumulative
curve for that session is displayed.
LABELS: Can now be up to 40 characters long.
RENAME: You can change the names of files on disk from within
CLASS.
PARAMETER DISPLAY/PRINT: now shows weights, maximum scores, and
full, 40 character labels for all assignments.
STATS: Displays the number of * in the F row; blanks and / are shown
separately now.
Calculation of the mean now excludes blanks and /. The mean,
variance and standard deviation are more accurate.
Shows the current cumulative curve for each assignment.
ROSTER DISPLAY: now shows the final grades, if any.
RECORD: You can put a / before any grade, e.g. /B, and that grade
will be treated as a / in calculations (and so ignored);
allows keeping record of optional assignments, dropping low
scores, etc.
OTHER CHANGES:
NEW MENU: the menu has been redesigned for clarity & ease of use.
NAMES can be up to 250 characters long, making room for comments,
phone #s, etc. Changing a name has been made easier.
A previously set GPA curve is no longer changed to 0 if you press
RETURN to cancel curve setting.
The CREATE process has been simplified; you no longer need indicate
the maximum number of students.
CHANGE GRADE has been eliminated as redundant; use RECORD instead.
DESK ACCESSORIES are now activated.
FIXES: See VERSIONS.ASC for a description of fixes and
improvements since the initial release of version 3.0.
MORE: For a complete description of the many features of CLASS,
including a host of valuable tips and hidden shortcuts, see the
manual. You can get a copy by becoming a registered CLASS user.
(See below).
RUNNING THE PROGRAM:
You must be in medium (color) or high (b/w) resolution to run CLASS.
Just double click on CLASS.PRG from the desktop.
The quick but cursory way to learn how to use CLASS is just to
load one of the two sample files provided and play around with
it. LETTER.CLA is a class roster in which grades are recorded
as letters (A,B-). NUMBER is one in which grades are recorded as
scores. Just follow the prompts. I've tried to make CLASS
as "idiot-proof" as possible, so don't worry about making a
mistake.
When you're ready, select "create" from the "file" menu and start
a CLASS roster for your own class.
TIP: Many functions ask for a student's NAME or NUMBER. You need
enter only as much of the student's name as necessary to dis-
dinquish him or her from others. For example, if "ELIOT, T.S." is
the only student whose name begins with "E, just enter an "E"
to find him. If there's also an "ELGAR" in the class, you need
only enter "ELI." (For more time-saving tips, get the manual!)
I would recommend that, after entering the students' names and
the name of the first assignment, you make a printout of the
roster. Record the grades by hand on the printout and
then record the grades by "column" on the computer. The list of
names on the hand record will then be exactly the same as the
listing on the computer, and you won't have to skip around
looking up each student. In addition, you'll then have a separate
record of the grades. At the end of the term, or any time
during the term, you can use CLASS to calculate the averages of
the grades entered. This method saves time in the long run.
Okay, one more tip: If you're recording letter grades, you can use
the keypad and type in "psuedo-scores" instead of letters. For
example, 2+ will be changed to C+ by the computer. 0 = F, 1 = D,
4- = A-, etc. This radically reduces the time it takes to record
grades.
If you don't care to create a roster but would like to have
CLASS calculate final grades, select "GPA & grades" from the
menu labeled "calculate" and then select "type" from the dia-
logue box.

Important Announcement
I've spent hundreds of hours working on this program, and I'm
still developing new features for it. I'm offering it as
SHAREWARE, i.e. pay for it if and only if you use it. In return
for a modest $15, you'll receive a disk with a 25-page, detailed
guide to CLASS (including many tips and shortcuts), the next
upgrade, a free foreign language learning game, a typewriter
program and a phone number to call for help. Sounds
fair, doesn't it? The address is:

NOTE: If you're already a registered user, you can get the latest
manual and upgrade for $5.
I sincerely hope you find this program as useful as I have, and I
welcome any suggestions for improvements. You may leave E-mail
for me on GEnie c/o G. WREN.
